4th grade Math:
FRACTIONS CC 4.NF
BIG IDEAS:
Novel Study:
Students follow up sessions of focused, independent reading with a four part reflection. In their novel study journals, students list and define new words. They note examples of figurative language. They summarize the chapters they read, pose questions and make predictions about what might happen next in the story.
Literature circles:
These small group book clubs engage students in rich conversations about shared readings. Students can express their opinions, predictions, and questions about a text in a productive, structured way. Students take on specific group roles which are designed to develop reading, speaking, and thinking abilities.
Writing Workshop
Students continued our work with persuasive writing by considering the following ideas:
- Persuasive writers think about problems and solutions in the world
- Writers change the world not just by looking at what’s broken, but also by looking at what’s beautiful
- Writers write to get others to pay attention to people, places, things, or ideas that they might otherwise walk right past
Ask your student to tell you what they have been writing about!
For the culminating writing piece later in the year, students will work on grant applications to create a change in the community related to our study of emergency preparedness.
Project
This week, engineering groups tested their models of Scoggins Dam to see if they could withstand an earthquake! Surviving designs will be on display during February's Celebrations of Learning. Up next, we will resume our study of Oregon History and take a trip to the Oregon Historical Society.
Geography Bee
Last week, we continued with the preliminary rounds of the National Geographic Bee to determine the Puffin class representative. There are 7 rounds of competition and each student individually answers a question in every round. The questions are about US and World geography. In some rounds, students receive multiple answers to choose from and in other rounds, the questions are open-ended. For more information, please visit: www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee. Only 4th-8th graders are allowed to participate in the National Bee, so Puffins who are 3rd graders just play along for practice! Next year, they'll have an opportunity to represent our class. We will finish our class competition by Wednesday to determine our class representation for the school-wide Geo Bee on February 4th!

On Wednesday, January 20th, we saw Theatre In The Grove's production of Wizard of Oz. To help cover the cost of the tickets, we are asking families to contribute $5. If you didn't contribute last week, it's not too late!
Thank you to everyone who has sent in $5 or more!
