Writing Homework- Notebooks Due: Thursday Mornings
- Students have a new writing notebook (decorated composition book) that they will be bringing home for this.
- Students are asked to practice personal responsibility by bringing this notebook home, completing their Reading Response Letter, and returning the notebook to school by Thursday morning each week. Ask them what their strategy will be for completing this circle of responsibility between home and school.
- Writing Homework Home Support: Ask your child to read the letter they have written out loud. Take a look at the letter and provide them with feedback about what they have done well and how they might make it better. Give reminders about proofreading and working on neat handwriting.
- Directions for completing the Reading Response Letter can be found inside the front cover of the writing notebook. Sentence starting ideas can be found on the last page of the notebook.
Our Week in Review:
Math:
This week, we played a new game during math workshop: Products- Four In A Row. Ask your kiddo how this game works and what kinds of strategies they used during play. We continued to use the four operations to help us understand math. Our focus was:
- Understanding that multiplication fact problems can be seen as comparisons of groups (e.g., 24 = 4 x 6 can be thought of as 4 groups of 6 or 6 groups of 4). 4.OA.1
- Multiplying or dividing to solve word problems by using drawings or writing equations and solving for a missing number. 4.OA.2
- Using what we know about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve multi-step word problems involving whole numbers. 4.OA.3
- Finding all factor pairs for a number from 1 to 100. 4.OA.4
Reading:
This week, Readers Workshop focused on comprehension strategies. To help us connect with the text and understand what we have read, we can predict what will happen next in a story, and read on to check the accuracy of our predictions. When reading non-fiction, students are being asked to tune into text features to help them find what they are looking for (research) and to comprehend what they read. Ask your kiddo to name as many text features as they can.
Writing:
During Writer's Workshop some of our young authors worked to finish publishing their adapted fairy tales. Others engaged with creative writing and got a chance to work in their writer's notebook. Our lessons focused on strategies for learning and using new words in our writing.
Out and About to Tillamook Forestry Center

Class Read Aloud
Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin. This story incorporates many Chinese folk tales told by the main character's father, which makes it a great fit with our focus on storytelling!
