A Message from Art Teacher Stephanie:
Buying a yearbook helps support the FGCS art program, and the yearbooks are currently on sale for $20. Students absolutely love getting their book during the last week of school, but they must be ordered ahead of time.
You can purchase a yearbook at this link:
Yearbook using the passcode: 1016052158063632.
On the website, you have the option customize your book with your own pictures if you wish, but you don't have to. This week in art students have been working on the cover, and we will vote on the cover during Celebrations of Learning on February 9th!
If you have any questions please email Stephanie at [email protected].

What's happening in the Puffin Nest:
Language Arts
This week, students each chose an informational book about an animal. Next, we created an outline to guide our research. Student spent time reading their books and looking for important ideas. Our next step was to make a plan for our first informational paragraph. This week, students are writing about the appearance of their animal. We talked about how that might include physical adaptations that help it to survive. As we plan and draft, we will continue to focus on the composition and structure of an informative paragraph:
- Starting with a strong topic sentence
- Selecting "Star Ideas" to support the topic that are parallel/related to each other, and providing details/examples
- Using transitions and composing a strong closing sentence that recycles big ideas from the topic sentence.

The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
Out & About & Science
This week for our Sphero project, we defined our engineering challenge:
- Student teams must design, build and finally race a chariot that can be pulled by the Sphero robots.
NOTE: All students have the option to bring in recycled supplies or a chariot rider (a figurine!) to use in constructing their chariot next Wednesday.
Social Emotional Learning
This week, we welcomed a brand new student into the Puffin Nest. We discussed all the routines and expectations that we have to help our day flow smoothly. We also talked about how we might help our new student to learn all about our community by setting a good example through our thoughtful actions. We continue to explore the important concepts of mindfulness and growth mindset as we work to do our best and treat others with kind consideration.
Inclusive Community Read Aloud for January: LGBTQIA+ History
This week, we continue our weekly "Inclusive Community" read-aloud series.
Through these read-alouds, we will learn about and celebrate diversity in our community.
This month, we will be reading a variety of texts centered around LGBTQIA+ historical figures and events.
This week, we will be reading: Be Amazing
