Writing Workshop:
To prepare for our Informational writing unit, we continue to work on the composition and structure of an informative paragraph. This week, we focused on transition words and phrases which help us to organize and connect ideas in our writing.
On Friday, we had a writing party. Students planned and wrote a short narrative about being trapped in a snow globe!
During Reading Workshop:
Our Novel Study read aloud is The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
We are exploring a new genre: Science Fiction!
Each week, we explore new vocabulary, make new predictions & inferences, visualize the characters & setting, consider new information & ideas in the text, and reflect about the book through discussions and writing.
To support our work with electricity and circuits, we read some non-fiction books this week. We learned about text features that can help us with non-fiction comprehension.
Out & About & Science
This week for our In & About, students created a circuit using their bodies, ping pong balls and a "dancing machine." Can your Level 2 engineer explain how it worked? Students then faced a series of circuitry challenges. They used circuit tiles and Snap Circuit sets to demonstrate how electrical energy can transform into light, sound or motion. Some groups had to overcome frustration when the circuits didn't work as expected, but used trial and error to problem solve. Share as a family: what strategies help you get unstuck?
Social Emotional Learning
This week, we continued to explore compassion. We considered that having unmet needs can impact our emotions, and that our emotions can affect our behavior. We thought about how we can show compassion to ourselves and others when we are experiencing strong emotions.
- SEE someone in need
- CARE about their feelings
- DO something to show you care
