What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
Our Early Northwest Coast People Storypath Unit continues.
This week, we traveled to Stub Stewart Park for our O&A. Students completed 2 activities and went on a hike with their family clan groups.
First, students learned about native NW coast artistic traditions including finding mineral pigments, making paint and making paintbrushes. Puffins and Plovers then mixed and used earth pigments to create artwork related to their clan crest. Ask your student to tell you what they learned!
At the next station, students jumped into the rich NW storytelling tradition by retelling and acting out a native legend about their clan animal. (Back in the classroom, the Puffins made masks and performed their stories.)
During the hike, students were challenged to navigate a 1.8-mile loop that covered parts of 4 separate trails at Stub Stewart. Groups kept their eyes peeled for critters in the forest like newts, slugs, beetles and more! While they hiked, students also tried to identify different plants that are native to Oregon forests. They each had a "nature necklace" with a picture and facts about a plant. Upon finding their plant, they shared a fact about its medicinal and culinary use with their hiking group. Ask your student if they remember their plant and fun fact!
Puffins and Plovers had a great day out, building cooperation and camaraderie within their clan families.
