What's Happening in the Puffin Nest?
Last Week, we used our Out & About time for a science lab!
Level 2 students explored electricity and magnets through lots of hands-on activities and experiments. The lab continues this week with these topics and explorations:
- Conductivity group activity
- Insulator/conductor inquiry
- Magnet inquiry
We also began discussing our ideas for a classroom business!
The Puffins brainstormed up an amazing list of ideas that each met our 3 criteria:
- Wise use of resources (reduce-reuse-recycle)
- The production of goods or services must include everyone in our class
- Incorporates the big ideas we learned from our Storypath business community and from our Out & Abouts (using resources wisely/ considering the wants and needs of customers/ thoughtful advertising/ problem solving)
Puffins thought about the needs and wants of customers and decided to make a survey to help narrow down the choices for their business. The ideas...
- Puppet Show
- Planter/Terrarium
- Clothing for Stuffies
- Tile Trivet/Decoration
- Recycled Jewelry
- Journals
- Origami Decorations
The Puffins got feedback from teachers, students, and family members.
After tallying up the results, they had a clear winner: Planter/Terrarium
Over the course of the next few months, the Puffins will work through the different stages of the supply chain as they develop their classroom business. They will...
- Research the materials, design, and assembly of decorative terrariums
- Make a prototype for each category: air plants, succulents, faux plant. The product base will be made using recycled containers
- Create an order form and advertise to sell the product
- Learn about taking out a loan & sourcing materials
- Research plant care and create a plant care booklet to go with the product
- Assemble & deliver the product to their customers
- After repaying the loan, students will decide on a responsible way to spend the profits
