Our Week in Review:
4th grade Math:
We kicked off our fractions unit this week. CC 4.NF
BIG IDEAS:
Students follow up sessions of focused reading with a four part reflection. In their novel study journals, students list and define new words. They note examples of figurative language. They summarize the chapters they read, pose questions and make predictions about what might happen next in the story. This week, we examined cause and effect and looked for examples in our novels. We also talked about using new adjectives to describe our our books.
All School Meeting Presentation
Students synthesized learning from the NW Coastal People Story-path unit through iMovie presentations; using their own pictures and writing to communicate their ideas. These digital stories were shared at our all-school meeting.
I wanted to post the presentation here for everyone to view, but alas! The iMovie we shared at the All School meeting is too large a file for this website to upload. Not to worry, though- we will have it on display at our upcoming "Celebration of Learning" in February.
Out & About
We continue to study geology, earthquakes and engineering during in-class science labs. This week, we began an engineering project that examined structural shapes and earthquake resistant structures through a tower-building/engineering activity.
Volunteer/Donate
On Wednesday, January 20th, we will see Theatre In The Grove's production of Wizard of Oz. To help cover the cost of the tickets, we are asking families to contribute $5. All Puffins will be able to attend, even if your family cannot contribute at this time. Please have your student turn in money directly to me (Ginny). I have one extra ticket, so this means only one parent chaperone. I checked to see if the theater was selling more tickets for that performance, but they don't appear to be. (Full with FGCS kiddos!) If you are interested in going, perhaps you could call the theater to see if there are spots open.
Thanks for your excellent support!
Class Read Aloud
We are enjoying the award winning novel, Flora & Ulysses.
