How is Your Student's Homework Routine Going?
Level 2 Suggested Weekly Homework:
Reading: Spend at least 20 minutes reading (outside of school) every day.
Reading is on the "honor system" and we ask that you help your kiddo to develop a daily reading routine with good-fit books. At fall conferences we will send home an optional reading genre challenge.
Typing Homework: Level 2 students have typing homework to develop and support important keyboarding skills. Please practice at least 20 minutes per week on: Typing.com
Account usernames and passwords were given out during Family Visits.
Math homework: complete at least 30 minutes (or more) of math practice each week. This can be completed online, with math games, or through worksheets.

This week in reading workshop we worked on developing a system for talking about and sharing our favorite books. Students continued to work on selecting "good fit" books and developing reading stamina. During writing workshop, Puffins drafted, edited and published a narrative piece about their daily life in the Puffin Nest. We also used our Northwest Coastal forest mural as inspiration to write sense poems.
This week we met our Level 4 buddies! This is a new opportunity for Level 2 students and will happen once a month. Puffins will pair up with an older student from Chris Stanton's level 4 (7th and 8th grade) classroom. The older students will serve as mentors for our young Puffins and will build positive relationships through "buddy reading" and "math congress" problem solving activities. On Thursday, students traveled to the Level 4 classrooms and got to know their new buddies with an "all about me" survey.
In our Storypath project unit, we are learning about how indigenous people adapted to their environment by living off of the land and using materials they could procure or create. On our Wednesday Out & About, we visited the Backyard garden and students prepared fresh pesto using produce harvested from the garden and also worked in teams to create stable shelters using materials found nearby.
Next week, we will join the Plovers at Rogers Park for more hands-on activities related to our study of Native Americans. We will be outside all afternoon, so please help your student dress appropriately for the weather. Puffins should also bring a water bottle and a snack.
