Donations Needed
In preparation for our final NW Story path episode on November 15th, we are calling on all Puffin families to make a food donation. The final episode involves a celebration with a feast of traditional foods. We need your help to make it really special!
Please take a look at our food list below, and select an item (or items!) that you would be able to donate. To comply with state laws and to be safe for food allergies in the classroom, please send only commercially packaged food items.
As these donations are all dried/package sealed items, you can send your donation in any time between now and the 14th of November.
Dried Berries (blueberries/strawberries/huckleberries)
Dried Roots (vegetable chips)
Dried Meat (Jerky: salmon/turkey/elk or beef)
Level 2 Suggested Weekly Homework:
Reading Homework
Spend at least 20 minutes reading (outside of school) every day.
Reading is on the "honor system" and we ask that you help your kiddo to develop a daily reading routine with good-fit books. At fall conferences we will send home an optional reading genre challenge.
Typing Homework
Level 2 students have typing homework to develop and support important keyboarding skills. Please practice at least 20 minutes per week on: Typing.com
Math homework
It is strongly recommended that your student practice math skills
at least 30 minutes (or more) per week.
This can be completed online with Dreambox or Khan Academy. Students can also play math games, or complete worksheets (you can find grade level workbooks online or at the Learning Palace).
Current 4th grade Math Topics:
- Place Value

What's Happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, a “European Trader” arrived by ship on the shores of our NW Coastal village. After meeting with our chief, it was decided that trade would be allowed. Families decided to trade their artwork and fur pelts for beads and buttons. Many characters were excited to barter with this new trader, and some even happily gave him special gifts from their homes! But after he left, the class reflected on how the trader treated the villagers and how the trading experience could affect the community. We also learned that traders often brought diseases that had a devastating effect on the native population.
To encourage reflection, we discussed the following questions:
- How did our village respond to this event?
- How might our village change as a result of the trading?
- Why do you think the trader brought the goods that he did to trade?
- Do you think the members of our village made good trades? Why or why or not?
- If the trader were to return, what would you do differently?
After topic discussions and planning, students worked independently to write short story about their experiences with a trader from their character's perspective. Our focus as writers this week included: beginning with a lead sentence to spark interest and draw the reader into the story, focusing on the important event and providing clear information, using words to create vivid pictures, and including interesting details about the event. We also worked to edit carefully, making sure that our sentences sounded right and made sense when we read them out loud. Finally, we took the time to write carefully and neatly so that the stories would be easy to read and share.
