What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, an educator from Oregon Ballet Theatre met us at Step In Studio for a dance and storytelling workshop! After a warm-up activity, we considered how dancers might use their bodies to tell stories non-verbally. Students worked in groups to create and perform a 32-count dance performance representing a "small moment" from a familiar fairy tale.
Students also worked diligently in the classroom to complete filming and to add narration to their stop-motion animations. In class discussion, we talked about working collaboratively and the skills needed to complete a project successfully with others.
Our "Fairytale Adaptations" Writing Unit & Stop Motion Animations!
- We started our fairy tale writing unit by reading and listening to many original fairy tales. We saw that it’s all about Characters – Setting – Motivation – Trouble – and Resolution.
- We studied Modern Fairy Tale Adaptations to help us with writing our own. We looked closely at the changes that authors made and noticed that they usually made one big important change to improve the story.
- We drafted, revised and published our own adaptations of fairytales.
- We studied our stories, and used them to create a storyboard, characters, and backgrounds for filming the stop motion animations.
Our current class Read Aloud:
Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin. This story incorporates many Chinese folk tales told by the main character's father, which makes it a great fit with our focus on folktales & storytelling!
