What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, a “European Trader” arrived by ship on the shores of our NW Coastal village. Students gathered (in character) at a village meeting to discuss this unexpected arrival. The village decided to send a group out to welcome the trader. Each family chose to meet with the trader, and many agreed to trade family clan artwork, fur pelts, and more...in exchange for metals (copper and iron). Many villagers were excited to barter with this new trader, and some eagerly traded away many items from their homes. After the trader left, the class reflected on how the trades were made hastily. They considered whether or not they had made “fair” or “equal” exchanges.
To encourage reflection, we discussed the following questions:
- How did our village respond to this event?
- How might our village change as a result of the trading?
- Why do you think the trader brought the goods that he did to trade?
- Do you think the members of our village made good trades? Why or why or not?
- If the trader were to return, what might we do differently?
Writing:
After topic discussions and planning, students will work independently to write short narratives about their experiences with a trader from their character's perspective. Our focus as writers this week include:
- beginning with a lead sentence to spark interest and draw the reader into the story
- focusing on the important event and providing clear information, using words to create vivid pictures
- including interesting details about the event
Students will also edit carefully, making sure that sentences sound right and make sense when we read them out loud.
Finally, we will the time to write carefully and neatly so that our stories will be easy to read and share.
