Math Homework
For November 11th-18th, focus on these Apply homework pages:
For 4th graders:
Work on lessons in the new Module 2 workbook up to lesson 11.
For 3rd graders:
Work on lessons in the new Module 2 workbook up to lesson 6.
New homework-workbooks for Module 2 were sent home at fall conferences. As we discussed, the workbooks work best when the "purple text" is read out-loud together with an adult before students work on the lesson questions.
Also recommended: daily practice with multiplication facts for 2-10's
Check out these multiplication fact practice apps:

Writing Workshop
Students practiced their editing skills and helped others by rotating through "CUPS" editing stations:
- C: capital letts
- U: Understanding (all our sentences sound right and make sense)
- P: punctuation
- S: spelling
During Reading Workshop we practiced growing our creativity and imagination as readers through visualization. We focused on the descriptive language and vivid details of our read alouds. We talked about how visualizing is like "seeing a movie in our mind" as we read text, and that we are constantly changing, rearranging, and adding to that mental picture as we gather more information through the text. We practiced using our 5 senses to describe characters, settings, and details of the plot.
Novel Study Read Aloud: The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot is the story of Rozzum unit 7143, a robot who finds herself on a strange island. She uses her robot skills and programming instincts to study her environment and learn how to adapt to her new wild surroundings.
Out & About & Science
In the classroom, we learned about patterns of motion and friction.
- We learned that friction is the force that resists an object sliding or moving over a surface. We saw that friction slows things down.
- We also talked about energy being the ability to exert a force. We learned that potential energy is stored up energy, and that kinetic energy is movement energy. For example, as a skateboard board travels down a ramp, its energy is transformed from potential energy to kinetic energy.
This week's O&A took us to Lincoln Park to meet with skateboarding instructors Sarah, Colin and Bria from Skate Like a Girl.
We learned the physics behind some basic skating tricks, and students practiced using unbalanced forces, friction and potential energy to create moves on miniature "tech decks." In what ways does physics play a role in your favorite sport?
Social Emotional Learning
To help us build confidence, strengthen focus, and to navigate our changing emotions, we can practice mindfulness in the classroom.
Mindfulness means really slowing down to notice what is happening right now in the moment without dwelling on what has happened in the past or worrying about the future.
This week, we discussed the importance of training our attention to the present moment and practiced mindful activities through:
- breathing exercises
- sensory experiences
- guided imagery
Inclusive Community Read Aloud for November: Indigenous People’s Month
This week, we began our weekly "Inclusive Community" read-aloud series.
Through these read-alouds, we will learn about and celebrate diversity in our community. This week our book is Stolen Words which is available HERE if you'd like to check it out.
