We need your help to make it really special!
Please take a look at our food list below, and select an item (or items!) that you would be able to donate.

What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, we travelled to the Portland Art Museum for our Out & About to observe important NW coast artifacts. Students focused on one artifact: making observations, sketching, and writing about their thinking. While at the museum, we also visited a children's book illustrations exhibit where students made up their own story for a favorite illustration.
Back in the classroom, students learned more about the culture and communication of early Northwest Coast people by creating art that incorporates the Northwest Coast style and conventions.
We are learning that art is one way communities of people define and express themselves to others and to one another. By imitating the art of the Northwest Coast people, students strengthen their character and community identities, as well as their understanding of the Northwest Coast culture.
This week, we asked and answered the following questions:
- Why did the Northwest Coast people have so much art in their culture?
- Why was wood an important resource for art?
- What animals were depicted in Northwest Coast artwork? Why?
- What is symmetry? Why does so much NW Coast art have symmetry?
- What shapes and colors were common in the art?
- What were some of the items on which people carved their designs?
During Writer's Workshop this week we focused on our NW Storypath project. Students considered our work and research so far to brainstorm notes about their character identity, village jobs and the village setting. Students drafted, edited and published this historical fiction piece about daily life in their village.
Finally, we prepared to select a chief for our village. Students considered the qualities of a good leader. Everyone thought about their own strengths and weaknesses. Students narrowed down the possible choices for chief through amiable clan discussions and we held a brief debate before students voted to elect our new village chief.
