Writing Workshop:
To prepare for our Informational writing unit, we continue to work on the composition and structure of an informative paragraph. This week, we focused on using transition words and phrases to help organize and connect ideas in our writing.
During Reading Workshop:
Our Novel Study read aloud is The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
We are exploring a new genre: Science Fiction!
Each week, we continue explore new vocabulary, make new predictions & inferences, visualize the characters & setting, consider new information & ideas in the text, and reflect about the book through discussions and writing.
We have also been examining text features to help us better understand informational texts. On Wednesday, we read non-fiction books about electricity and circuits to practice using text features.
- table of contents, titles & headings
- bold words, glossary
- pictures- diagrams- captions
Out & About & Science
For our "In & About" on Wednesday, students created a circuit using their bodies, ping pong balls and a "dancing machine." Can your Level 2 engineer explain how it worked? Students then faced a series of circuitry challenges. They used circuit tiles and Snap Circuit sets to demonstrate how electrical energy can transform into light, sound or motion. Some groups had to overcome frustration when the circuits didn't work as expected, but used trial and error to problem solve.

Social Emotional Learning
This week, we continued to explore compassion. We considered how unmet needs influence our emotions. We thought about how emotions can influence our behavior. We talked about recognizing and showing compassion to ourselves and others when experiencing strong emotions.
- SEE someone in need
- CARE about their feelings
- DO something to show you care.
