Writing Homework Begins This Week!
- Students have a new writing notebook (decorated composition book) that they will be bringing home for this.
- Students are asked to practice personal responsibility by bringing this notebook home, completing their Reading Response Letter, and returning the notebook to school by Thursday morning each week. Ask them what their strategy will be for completing this circle of responsibility between home and school.
- Writing Homework Help: Ask your child to read the letter they have written out loud. Take a look at the letter and provide them with feedback about what they have done well and how they might make it better. Give reminders about proofreading and working on neat handwriting.
- Directions for completing the Reading Response Letter can be found inside the front cover of the writing notebook. Sentence starting ideas can be found on the last page of the notebook.
Goal Setting Conferences
I look forward to seeing parents and Puffins on Thursday or Friday for goal setting conferences! This will be a time for us to chat about your student's academic snapshot, as well as goals for the year and homework expectations.
Our Week in Review:
Math:
This week, we played a new game during math workshop: Multiple Turn Over. Ask your kiddo how this game works and what kinds of strategies they used during play. We continued to use the four operations to help us understand math. Our focus was:
- Understanding that multiplication fact problems can be seen as comparisons of groups (e.g., 24 = 4 x 6 can be thought of as 4 groups of 6 or 6 groups of 4). 4.OA.1
- Multiplying or dividing to solve word problems by using drawings or writing equations and solving for a missing number. 4.OA.2
- Using what we know about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve multi-step word problems involving whole numbers. 4.OA.3
- Finding all factor pairs for a number from 1 to 100. 4.OA.4
Reading:
This week, Readers Workshop swung into action with goal setting, genre reading logs, a focus on comprehension strategies and a trip to the public library.
Writing:
Our young writers began publishing their latest adapted tale this week. They worked on setting goals for writing. We talked about how we can grow and change when we reflect about ourselves, take on challenges, and put in effort over time. Students also worked on turning their story character into a pumpkin during art class.
Out and About follow up with the Oregon Ballet Theater
On Wednesday, an educator from Oregon Ballet Theatre worked with the class to reflect on our trip last week and help with our study of story telling and fairy tales. We used Step In Studio, next to FGCS, for this visit. Ask your kiddo to tell you about it!
Class Read Aloud
Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin. This story incorporates many Chinese folk tales told by the main character's father, which makes it a great fit with our focus on storytelling!
