Writing Workshop
This week we finished our personal narratives and got to share stories at our publishing party! We also engaged with some quick and fun writing exercises.
Up next: Informative/Explanatory Texts
To prepare for our Informational writing unit, we will be focusing on the composition and structure of an informative paragraph.
During Reading Workshop we considered an incredibly important part of reading: comprehension monitoring. Students rightly pointed out that if we don't understand what we read, there's no point to it! We talked about self-monitoring for comprehension break-down moments, and using fix-up strategies to get back on track:
- Stop and think regularly (end of paragraph, end of page, end of chapter, end of book)
- Ask and answer our own questions, or ask others
- Re-read, and read slowly
- Use context clues and pictures or text features
Novel Study Read Aloud: The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot is the story of Rozzum unit 7143, a robot who finds herself on a strange island. She uses her robot skills and programming instincts to study her environment and learn how to adapt to her new wild surroundings.
Out & About & Science
In the classroom, we continued exploring energy (the ability to make things happen) by considering collisions. We learned that:
- A moving object transfers energy when it comes in contact with another object.
- Making an object faster or heavier results in more energy transfer.
- In a collision, some energy is converted into sound and heat.
Social Emotional Learning
This week, our focus was compassion.
Compassion is when you SEE someone in need, CARE about their feelings, and DO something to show you care.
