Language Arts Workshop
This week, we looked back at our collection of personal stories and chose one special seed idea. We want our personal narratives to be filled with details and emotion so that the reader will feel like they are right there in the moment with us! That's why it's so important to zoom in on one small moment.
Next week, we will begin planning and drafting our stories. We will also focus on mentor texts with rich, descriptive language that demonstrate the components of personal narrative stories.
You can support your kiddo by sharing family stories at home!
"I remember the time when..."
Demonstrate oral storytelling by telling your kiddo stories from your younger years, as well as stories about them as little ones. Prompt your kiddo to think up personal stories from the last few years of their lives that they can recall and describe in detail!
Novel Study Read Aloud: The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot is the story of Rozzum unit 7143, a robot who finds herself on a strange island. She uses her robot skills and programming instincts to study her environment and learn how to adapt to her new wild surroundings.
During Reading Workshop we focused on making "Text to World "connections. What is a text-to-world connection? These are connections where we link what we are reading to real events (past or present), social issues, other people, and happenings going on in the world. Students learn about world events from their families and friends, from what they hear on TV and radio, and what they see in movies and online information sources. Strong text to world connections happen when we can use what we've learned through these mediums to enhance our understanding of the text that we are reading.
Out & About & Science
This week in class, we focused on Animal Group Behavior. Here's what we learned:
- Group behavior is what animals do with other animals to help them survive
- Animals form groups to defend themselves, to gather food, and to find mates
- Animal group behavior can involve a few animals or thousands
Waves of migrating geese put on a show for us at Fernhill Wetlands on this week's Out and About! We learned that migrating birds fly in a V-formation which reduces wind resistance that helps them conserve energy.
On our Out & About, students had the chance to practice their nature journaling skills while soaking up the view. We also enjoyed a wetland walk with a mission: to track down hidden native plants and animals using a guided map and gather facts about their amazing adaptations. Ask your Plover or Puffin to tell you about the organisms they "collected" on this Pokemon-Go-inspired hike. A huge thanks to all the adult volunteers that made our day possible!
