What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, students learned more about the culture and methods of communication of early Northwest Coast people by creating art that incorporates the Northwest Coast style and conventions.
We are learning that art is one way communities of people define and express themselves to others and to one another. By imitating the art of the Northwest Coast people, students strengthen their character and community identities, as well as their understanding of the Northwest Coast culture.
This week, we asked and answered the following questions:
- Why did the Northwest Coast people have so much art in their culture?
- Why was wood an important resource for art?
- What animals were depicted in Northwest Coast artwork? Why?
- What is symmetry? Why does so much NW Coast art have symmetry?
- What shapes and colors were common in the art?
- What were some of the items on which people carved their designs?
For our "In & About" this week, we tackled some engineering projects!
Native Americans have long used science and engineering to develop tools, homes, clothing, cooking methods, and more—passing this knowledge down through generations. Many of these innovations are still being used today! During our In & About, students used their engineering skills to build a shelter, weave a basket, or invent a tool while discovering technologies designed by Oregon’s first engineers. Each student received a kit from the Museum of Natural and Cultural History for this activity.
A Note About Water Bottles:
This year, all students need to come to school with a labeled water bottle. Due to Covid, we had to turn our water fountains into water dispensers so that students wouldn't be drinking from the fountain. Students can fill their water bottles at the water fountains but can't drink from them. Please make sure your kiddo brings their water bottle to school each day.
Dressing for Cold & Rainy Weather :
To ensure comfort and general happiness, please make sure that your kiddo is prepared for the weather. Students should wear or bring weather/activity appropriate footwear and an outer jacket that can repel water.
Monday & Thursday: Outdoor PE Wednesday: Out & About
Recess: Twice Everyday
NOTE: Students can also bring extra clothes/socks/shoes and masks (keep in backpack).
If you need any help getting rain gear for your kiddo, please let us know!
