Bridging Ceremony 1-3 p.m. Thurs., June 6/Taylor-Meade Auditorium
Our annual Bridging Ceremony honors students in 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th grades who are 'bridging' to the next grade level or graduating from FGCS. The ceremony includes student performances and a farewell slide show for 8th graders. Parents and other family members of bridging students are invited to attend. Taylor-Meade Auditorium is located on the Pacific University campus. The auditorium will open for seating at 12:30 p.m. Please allow plenty of time to find parking nearby if you are driving.
Important note: The ceremony is expected to end about 3 p.m. Parents may take their students home with them from the ceremony, but they must check out directly with teachers so we make sure everyone is accounted for. Students will otherwise return to school with their parents to be dismissed as usual at 3:20 p.m.
Friday, June 7th
FGCS Field Day 9:45 am to 12 pm at Lincoln Park
Our annual Field Day takes place on the last day of school. After field day activities wrap up, staff and volunteers serve students pizza, watermelon and fruit juice for lunch. There is no school lunch service that day because it's a Friday. Students are welcome to bring lunch from home if they don't want pizza or will need more fuel for the day. As with Bridging, if parents come to Field Day, they are welcome to take their students home with them afterward rather than have students walk back to school with their classes, but they are asked to check out directly with teachers so we keep track of everyone.

What's Happening in the Puffin Nest...
Thanks to everyone who attended our Celebrations of Learning event on Thursday!
This week, our level 2 students hosted an interactive "Book Tasting" event to show off their favorite books, and for family and friends to sample different genres, authors, topics, and book series.
Science Explorations:
This week we learned about domestication (or “selection”) in plants, focusing on how the fruits and vegetables in our grocery stores and gardens have been changed from their wild counterparts to be bigger, tastier, and more varied. We solved the mystery, “How could you make the biggest fruit in the world?"
You can help reinforce this week’s learning by taking your child with you on your next trip to the grocery store or farmer’s market. Find a variety of fruit which might be exciting or unfamiliar to your child, and stoke their curiosity by asking: What kind of fruit do you think this is? What do you think it tastes like? (Then, of course, try that fruit!)
BONUS! The Puffins have been working to earn a special activity: Candy Flower Sculptures! On Friday, they made and labeled all the parts of a flower in their amazing candy creations! Fun!
Writing Workshop
Students are finishing their information books during writer's workshop.
Our Process and Goals:
- Selecting a topic for informational writing.
- Conducting research and gathering notes from trustworthy sources.
- Using an outline to organize information.
- Writing an interesting beginning and conclusion.
- Writing paragraphs with a topic sentence, facts and relevant details.
- Reading, revising, and editing as we work.
- Including headings, text boxes, pictures with captions, and other visuals in our finished books.
Suggested Weekly Homework:
Reading Homework
Spend at least 20 minutes reading (outside of school) every day.
Reading is on the "honor system" and we ask that you help your kiddo to develop a daily reading routine with good-fit books and a well-lit, comfy reading spot away from distractions.
Typing Homework
Level 2 students have typing homework to develop and support important keyboarding skills. Please practice at least 20 minutes per week on: Typing.com
Math homework
Every week, the math homework is to complete at least 30 minutes of math practice.
Ideas for math practice:
- Recommended: Students can get valuable math practice with their Dreambox account. The Dreambox accounts offer an easy way to track math progress and feature assignments that are on-topic with what we are learning in class.
- If your family would prefer to practice math skills in other ways (practice books, worksheets, flash cards, math games or other online resources such as Khan Academy), please send in your student's work OR send me an email before Friday morning each week letting me know how they completed their 30 minutes of weekly math practice.
- Current 3rd/ 4th grade math topics are listed below.
