“The King and Princess Polly have varmint trouble. Might be a pesky Unicorn. Could be a cantankerous Giant Hog. Maybe a Fire-Breathing Dragon. Who can deal with these troublesome varmints? Why, Little Man Jack, of course, the world champion varmint whacker! Colorful shadow puppets and live banjo and hammer dulcimer music bring this Appalachian fairy tale to life.”

What’s happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week we had a special visitor:
Pacific University Professor Jennifer Hardacker
She introduced the kids to animation preproduction: It’s what you do before you animate! She demonstrated how filmmakers change a written script into film using storyboards. Next, she lead the Puffins through the following activities:
- Storyboarding: writing and drawing a few frames based on a very specific passage from the fairy tale they are adapting
- Exploring voice acting: Voice Actor/Director pairing and practice reading a portion of the fairy tale story
This practice will help to prepare our kiddos to create a short animation of their own fairy tale adaptation. Students are currently planning their stories with partners.
Our current class Read Aloud:
Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin. This story incorporates many Chinese folk tales told by the main character's father, which makes it a great fit with our focus on folktales & storytelling!
