What's Happening in the Puffin Nest?
This week, we travelled out to the Oregon coast to participate in the Haystack Rock Awareness Program.
The HRAP is an environmental education program with a mission to protect, through education, the intertidal and bird ecology of the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock.
Students cycled through three stations where they learned about tidal pool animals, sea birds, and the interactions of those organisms with the environment where they live.
Students also put their teamwork skills to the test with our Oceanic Olympic Challenge:
- Whale sonar challenge
- Beach clean up – pick up at least one pound of trash
- Build a sand sculpture of your coastal animal with as much detail as possible
- Use driftwood to create a protective structure around a Plover/Puffin egg that can withstand a stick being dropped on it
- Build a food pyramid with your bodies
- Capture a photograph of the coast ecosystem with your team
Our O&A Objectives:
- Identify 2-3 challenges faced by animals in coastal ecosystems
- Identify how tide pool animals and seabirds have adapted to deal with these challenges
- Demonstrate how to interact with tide pools and nesting seabirds without causing harm
- Practice solving problems with your team during the Oceanic Olympics
Research is underway and students are preparing to collaborate on their informational books and educational exhibits. The forest, wetland and ocean visitors centers will be open at Celebrations of Learning!

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) State Testing
Please help support your Puffin by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep.
Your kiddo can also practice at home on the student practice test site. After following the link provided here, sign in as a guest, select your grade and test: Math or ELA (English Language Arts).
