Monday, September 19th: Level 2 begins weekly homework!
- Reading: at least 20 minutes reading (outside of school) every day.
- Math: 10 minutes (or more) of math practice on weekdays.
The Apply book helps students deepen their understanding of the concepts they learned in class through practice at home. Apply has three parts:
- Family Math
The Family Math letters provide a topic overview, images of models and strategies, and key terminology. It also includes ideas for topic-related math activities that may be done at home. - Student Practice
Each Practice is structured as two pages. The front page includes Practice problems that represent learning from class that day. The second page includes Remember problems (to stay sharp with familiar concepts). - Practice Partners
Practice Partners serve as a guide for families who are supporting their student with the Practice and Remember problems at home. These pages illustrate problems like those worked in class and an example of the thinking that helps students solve those problems (in purple text) .
- 4th graders: students can work on lessons 1-6 (please STOP at page 40)
- 3rd graders: students can work on lessons 1-6 (please STOP at page 45)

What's happening in the Puffin Nest:
Language Arts Workshop
This week we kicked off our Reading Workshop by establishing routines for meeting together for daily lessons, picking out great books, and choosing comfy reading spots.
Our Reading Workshop has three main parts:
- Mini-Lesson: A short lesson focusing on a reading strategy or skill to help us become stronger readers.
- Independent Reading: Time to read a book of choice, while practicing the skills and strategies we just learned. We will also jot down ideas and have teacher reading conferences.
- Share Time: Everyone gathers back together to share about our reading, what we noticed or learned about ourselves as readers and thinkers.
Science Focus: Adaptations and the Environment
In the classroom, students learned that animals, including humans, have adaptations or characteristics that help them to obtain food, protect themselves, and reproduce to help them survive. We considered how different animals have different types of adaptations that serve different purposes.
On Wednesday, we walked to the backyard garden for our Out & About. In the garden classroom, students further explored animal adaptations with a few activities:
- Fox & owl ears
- Bee anatomy
- Build a bug with adaptations for our garden
Class Meetings & Social Emotional Learning
This week, we continued to work on establishing our classroom procedures with a focus on stewardship, citizenship and scholarship. Our kiddos are also working on building stamina within our daily routines.
