Out & About, Science and Social Emotional Learning
In our morning classroom community meetings, we engaged with read-alouds and group discussion to consider the important character trait of kindness. Practicing kindness towards ourselves and others can help us to have a positive outlook, which reduces stress and supports creativity and a willingness to learn.
Next, we worked on strategies for focusing our attention and managing emotions with mindfulness activities in the classroom.
This week, we continued to explore animal adaptations, this time focusing on behavioral adaptations. We learned that behavioral adaptations are all about how an animal acts in order to survive. This includes actions like hibernating, migrating and communicating.
We also considered how human students have behavioral adaptations that help them to be successful when they join a new school and classroom community! For example, we can:
- practice focusing and paying close attention
- manage time and stay on task
- use strategies for managing emotions and staying calm
- keep an open mind, take the risk of making mistakes, and try new things
- being kind to others to make friends and work well in groups
On Wednesday, we walked to Roger's Park for two activities:
- Mindfulness: Students had an introductory Tai Chi class with guest teacher Mark Scott. Mark, who leads classes at Forest Grove's "Creative Enterprises" studio, shared why he loves this practice as a way to focus both body and mind.
- Adaptations: As a part of our wildlife science unit, we explored some of the animals that are specially adapted to live among the Garry Oak habitat in the park. Students reviewed what they know about physical adaptations while learning about the White Oak ecosystem. Next, they learned more about behavioral adaptations by playing the squirrel game.
